Harold the Giraffe
At our second session with Harold we got to look inside a human body and we learnt all about the brain, the heart and the lungs. We also learnt about our emotions and what makes us feel happy, sad, angry and frustrated. We learnt that it is OK to be different.
Before we left we got to give Harold a big hug.

Statistics
For statistics we have been learning about tally charts and bar graphs.
Today Mrs Rova gave us each a packet of M&Ms and we had to produce a bar chart about the colours we found in our packet.
Before we got started we talked about how to make a prediction.
We had to find out the least and most popular colour in each of our packets. Then we did an overall tally and chart for the class results. We also looked at which colours had the same amount of M&Ms.

Did you know that the most popular M&M colour in the class was orange?
Did you know that the least popular M&M colour was green?
Perhaps you could try this at home....

Blow Pens
Harold the Giraffe
Today we went to visit Harold the Giraffe. We met Abbie and we played a game called 'Bug or Boost'. In the truck there was a heap of different coloured lights. We loved the green colour. On the roof of the truck were special sparkly stars. Harold told us a very funny joke and we laughed. It was funny when he blew us a kiss. We can not wait to go back and see Harold again.

Mannequin challenge
Room 15 begged Mrs Rova to have a go at the Mannequin Challenge. Mrs Rova relented and let us have two attempts at the latest craze that has swept the nation. Please watch our videos and see how super dooper still we can stand.
The Room 15 children challenge our class families to have a go at creating one at home..... We can not wait to see what you can create together.
Writing time
Room 15 love independent whole class writing time. We choose some classical music to listen to. (Apologies that it sounds loud, Mrs Rova was videoing from right in front of the speaker) We enjoy practicing all the wonderful things we have been learning. Our class goal this week is to re-read our writing and check we have used capital letters and full stops in the correct place. Today we were writing about if we were king/queen for the day. This is followed on from the big book we have been reading this week. Watch these amazing learning stars at writing time!

Puriri Moth

Today on the way to school, Brock and his mum found a green moth. Our class had read a story about the Puriri Moth and we knew that they were native to New Zealand and once they had hatched they only live for about 24 hours. We were very excited to actually see one in real life. Please click here to find out more - Moth information for kids.
Opossum visits Room 15
Taylah and her mum Katie shared their pet opossum with our class. While it visited it munched happily on a strawberry. We learnt some interesting information about opossums. We now know that they are nocturnal and that when they are babies they live inside their mothers pouch. Please ask your child about what else opossums can do.

Rubbish Day
Every week when it is time to take the recycling and the general waste bucket up to the rubbish station Room 15 take it in turns to sort the bins. We try and aim for 100% rubbish in the right bins.
The Worm Farm
Today Eliza and Zeta explained how the worm farm works. Room 15 listened carefully and asked loads of interesting questions. They learnt all about when and what to feed the worms. We wrote some very cool stories about it. We know that worm poo is called vermacast and that worm wees is good for the garden. You can purchase the worm wee for $2.

Rewena Bread
100s board fun
Some of the different ways we solved this were;
Kharma - I know that the last column is skip counting in 10 and so then I counted backwards to get my coloured squares.
Izzy - I counted each square forward or backwards from the biggest number.
Corrin - I knew that the numbers in each column ended the same so I counted forwards or backwards in 1s to solve it.
Jayden - I skip counted in 2's and then found the end number and then counted the gaps backwards.
Lucas - I was skip counting in 10's and then I knew if I moved down a column it would be just adding 10.
We enjoyed this activity so much that we shared it with Room 14.

Prancer
On Friday Taryn (from Room 14) bought in her lamb to share with us. We watched him having a bottle and his tail was wagging fast. Prancer was wearing a special jacket to keep warm. He was very friendly and liked being patted by everybody. Thanks Taryn for sharing your new pet with Room 15.

Bug hotel
Room 15 went to visit the Bug Hotel that Room 20 made. We loved looking in all the different "rooms' and areas of the hotel. Some of us saw spiders, slaters and bees. We remembered to look - not touch and to use a quiet voice. The children thought it was a great idea and definitely want to visit it again. Perhaps when you are next at school you could go and visit it too.

Popcorn
Our poem this week was called Popcorn. It talked about the kernel popping into fluff We decided at discovery time to make our own popcorn in the popcorn maker. Mrs Rova set a challenge - we had to create something to hold our popcorn in using only paper. We invented some interesting contraptions for the popcorn to go into. It tasted delicious. Some of the popcorn was popping out of the bowl and onto the floor. We were laughing.
Reducing rubbish
Our school was donated some new stickers for our bins. The stickers are to remind us what goes into the black bin. The black bin is the rubbish that we can recycle. Marlene came in to put the sticker on and talk to us about what we can put in the bin. Room 15 have decided that we are going to spend some time each day checking that the correct rubbish is in the bin.

Aidan's drone
We went to watch Aidan from Room 6 fly his drone. A drone is like a flying robot. It has a remote control. Aidan told us that his drone cost $150 and it can fly really high. He said it can go up to 100 metres in the sky. We watched the drone with Room 14 and all the Year 5 and 6 children. It was fun.

Apple crumble and ice-cream
On Friday in Discovery Marlene showed Rooms 14, 15 and 18 how to make ice-cream in the special ice cream maker. A few of the children got to measure out and add the ingredients. Then we got to watch the maker mix it all up. Eltham Tech Centre donated a big bucket of freshly picked apples and together we brainstormed some ideas about how to use them up. We decided on apple crumble and some of the children got to go to the kitchen and make it. Today Marlene and her helpers cooked it up and we got to sample the goods - and the children loved it! Ask your child about how it tasted. Perhaps if you get time over the holidays you could have a go at making apple crumble together.
